Park Board Committee Meeting

Election of Chair and Vice Chair
Commissioner Blyth was elected Chair and Commissioner Sharma Vice Chair of the Park Board Committee.

Staff Reports

Power to Be Proposal in Stanley Park at Second Beach
The committee approved the Power to Be (Adventure Therapy) proposal to provide inclusive outdoor education programs in Stanley Park for the Summer 2012 as a pilot project, including the location of a temporary storage unit at Second Beach to support their programming, and direct staff to report back in the Fall 2012. The program aims to enrich the health and quality of life for youth, families and adults living with significant life challenges.

2012 Operating Budget
The Board approved the 2012 strategic budget initiatives of $1.366 M and the one-time budget adjustments of $1.031 M, as outlined in the staff report, with the exception of the item pertaining to lifeguards. Staff will report back with options that allow the Board to meet its 2012 budget requirements.

Regular Board Meeting

Chair's Report
The Chair reported on First Nations Carvings at Oppenheimer Park, Trout Lake Community Centre opening, International Mother Tongue Day at Roundhouse, and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations announcement at Coal Harbour Community Centre.

General Manager's Report
Park Board related items on Council and Committee agenda this week include: 2012 Operating Budget and Public Consultation Update and Arts and Culture Advisory Committee.

Report of the Park Board Committee
The Board approved the recommendations of Committee: Power to Be Adventure Therapy proposal and 2012 Operating Budget initiatives (see Committee highlights above).

Motion
Commissioner Blyth put forward a notice of motion that staff be directed to work with Jim Green and his family to develop an outdoor space that recognizes and tells the story of Jim’s tremendous contribution to the City. The motion carried.

The next Park Board Committee Meeting will be held at 7 pm on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 2099 Beach Avenue with next Regular Park Board Meeting held immediately following the Committee Meeting that evening.
