Park Board Committee Meeting

Chair’s Report
The Chair reported on recent events: Ground-breaking ceremony to kick off reconstruction of the little league baseball diamonds at Hastings Community Park and unveiling of Artist Jonathan Borofsky’s work, Human Structures, at Hinge Park near the Olympic Village as part of the 2014-2016 Vancouver Biennale

Staff Report:
Environmental Education and Stewardship Action Plan
The Board approved ‘Rewilding Vancouver: From Sustaining to Flourishing’, the environmental education and stewardship action plan. The plan responds to 3 directions: special wild places in the city, nature in everyday life and meaningful Park Board leadership. The Board directed staff to provide a status update on the progress made towards implementation and key outcomes and reconvene the Environmental Education and Stewardship Task Force at least once, within the next year.

Special Event Approval – Special Summer Concert Series 2014
The Board approved the request from the Vancouver Urban Spaces Initiative (VUSI), organizers of the Special Summer Concert Series, for a 250 person Public Special Occasion License at New Brighton Park on July 27 and September 7 and at Brockton Point in Stanley Park on August 17, 2014. VUSI is a non-profit organization bringing communities together to experience art and culture.

Special Event Approval – SeaWheeze Sunset Festival 2014
The Board approved a request from Lululemon Athletica, organizers of the SeaWheeze Sunset Festival, for a 15,000 person Public Special Occasion Site License at Brockton Fields in Stanley Park on August 23, 2014. The ticketed event includes a yoga class, two concert performances and a new trapeze feature.

Special Event Approval – Community Food Markets
The Board approved a Community Food Market pilot program in 2014 with locations at selected community centres and at Grandview Park, with all arrangements to the satisfaction of the General Manager. 

Regular Board Meeting

General Manager’s Report
Park Board related items at Council and Committee this week include a report on action steps for ending homelessness and a report on the Public Art Program.

Report of the Park Board Committee
The Board approved the recommendations of Committee: Environmental Education and Stewardship Action Plan, Special Event Approval – Special Summer Concert Series 2014, Special Event Approval – SeaWheeze Sunset Festival 2014, Special Event Approval – Community Food Markets (see Highlights above).

Motion on Notice
Commissioner Coupar put forward a motion that:
A. Park Board Commissioners direct staff to suggest possible locations for a permanent, structurally safe home for love locks on Park Board property and report back to the Board.
B. Once Staff have reported back on possible locations for a permanent, structurally safe home for love locks on Park Board property, that the Park Board engage the public in a consultation process to determine the preferred, most favourable, and most feasible location to serve as a permanent home for love locks.The motion was carried.

Commissioner Blyth put forward a motion that Vancouver Park Board staff work with family members and friends of Bud Osborn to create a memorial for Bud Osborn that people in the future can remember Bud's important contributions to Vancouver and the awareness he has helped to raise for people who need it the most.
The motion was referred to the next Park Board Committee meeting.

Notice of Motions
Commissioner De Genova advised of a motion on notice titled Vancouver Southeast Seniors Centre Advisory Committee.

The next Park Board Committee Meeting will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014 at 2099 Beach Avenue with the next Regular Park Board Meeting held immediately following the Committee Meeting that evening.
