Review of the Practice of Keeping Captive Cetaceans in Stanley Park
On April 28, 2014, the Board requested information on the Vancouver Aquarium and its current practices relating to cetaceans. At a special meeting convened on July 26, the Board received a staff commissioned research report on the Vancouver Aquarium's current practices regarding captive cetaceans and how those practices compared to other aquariums. This report was prepared and presented by Dr. Joseph Gaydos, Chief Scientist and Wildlife Veterinarian, University of California Davis Wildlife Health Centre's SeaDoc Society Program. The Vancouver Aquarium was also invited to present on their programming, education, and rehabilitation work related to cetaceans, as well as on their work with other aquariums. Following these presentations, 133 registered delegations had the opportunity to speak to the Board on the subject. The Board reconvened the special meeting on July 28 to finish hearing from delegations and then reconvened again on July 31 for discussion. The Chair introduced a motion with 4 recommendations , which were approved unanimously. The Special Meeting was then adjourned.
